PRE-DISPOSAL FACILITY (PPRWMF)
PNRA licensed PINSTECH Pre-disposal Radioactive Waste Management Facility (PPRWMF) in January 2016, as an independent pre-disposal facility in accordance with national regulations. This facility is a designated site for the receipt and management of low and intermediate level radioactive waste including disused sealed radioactive sources (DSRS) from various nuclear/radiation facilities and activities in the country.
DISPOSAL FACILITY
For the long-term safe management of radioactive waste with no intention of retrieving, disposal facility is used for containment and isolation of the radioactive waste from the accessible biosphere. In Pakistan, PAEC has planned to establish two disposal facilities named National Institute for Conservation of Environment (NICE) in northern region and Regional Repository South (RRS) in southern region of Pakistan.
National Institute for Conservation of Environment (NICE)
PAEC, in September 2016, formally communicated its intention to develop and operate a Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF) in Punjab (District Chakwal) for safe management of Low-Level radioactive waste generated from operation of NPPs with the name of "National Institute for Conservation of Environment (NICE)". The licensing process of the facility is in progress.
Regional Repository South (RRS)
In February 2021, PAEC intention for development and operation of another NSDF for LLW in southern region of Pakistan has been received. The licensing process of the facility is also in progress.
