National Environmental Monitoring Program

Under the PNRA Ordinance, PNRA is responsible to ensure, implement and co-ordinate national program of environmental surveillance to check any build-up of environmental radioactivity that might affect the public health. Accordingly, PNRA has created Directorate of National Environmental Monitoring Program (NEMP) and established radiation monitoring laboratories for performing environmental radioactivity surveillance across the country.

PNRA collects samples of soil and water from different locations in the country for determining background radioactivity level all over the country for future reference. Moreover, it also monitors radiation level around nuclear power plants and research reactors to cross verify the environmental data submitted by the licensees. Similarly, PNRA analyzes samples of food and other exportable items to determine the levels of radioactivity and issues certificates to the exporters.
