National Workshop on Process for Communication with Interested Parties, Building Confidence and Effective Public Participation in Decision Making

Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) hosted a “National Workshop on process for communication with interested parties, building confidence and effective public participation in decision making” conducted by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts from 08-12 July, 2024 at PNRA HQs Islamabad.

In his opening remarks, Mr. M. Rahman, Member (Executive) PNRA welcomed the distinguished guests and emphasized that effective communication fosters a collaborative environment in which interested parties can share their views, gain consensus, understand the basis for decisions, and builds trust on the decision-makers. He also explained that the role of communication and consultation with interested parties is even more pivotal for operating organizations for sharing information about the impact of nuclear installations on the public and environment.

A delegation of IAEA experts, led by Senior Nuclear Safety Officer Mr. Jean Rene Jubin, participated in the workshop as resource persons. In his opening remarks, Mr. Jubin highlighted the objective and importance of communication and consultation with interested parties including public in the context of IAEA safety standards for building trust and confidence during licensing process.

The workshop was attended by participants having a diverse range of experience from operators, regulators and government representatives. The workshop remained very beneficial for developing understanding of the participants on the process and the benefits of communication and consultation with interested parties through oral presentations and interactive practical sessions.

In the end, PNRA management thanked IAEA for providing continued support and collaboration for building capacity in this important area.
