IAEA delegation visited PNRA ahead of the Country hosting its first-ever International Nuclear Emergency Preparedness Exercise

Islamabad– The Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) recently hosted Mr. Florian Baciu from the Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC) at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Mr. Petre Min, Head of Emergency Preparedness and Response at the National Commission for Nuclear Activities Control, Romania, for an official visit to Pakistan from 18th to 19th July 2024.

Mr. Faizan Mansoor, the Chairman PNRA, warmly welcomed the distinguished guests, highlighting the visit as a testament to the longstanding partnership between IAEA and PNRA. This collaboration plays a crucial role in enhancing nuclear safety and security measures in Pakistan. Pakistan's active participation in IAEA's Convention Exercises (ConvEx), including hosting ConvEx-2c in 2024, underscores its commitment to strengthening global emergency preparedness and response arrangements. Notably, ConvEx-2c will be the first-ever International Nuclear Emergency Preparedness Exercise hosted by Pakistan.

Mr. Florian and Mr. Petre praised PNRA for establishing and implementing a robust regulatory framework for emergency preparedness and response in Pakistan, aligning with international standards. They commended the National Radiation Emergency Coordination Centre (NRECC) as a world-class facility equipped with state-of-the-art resources and staffed by highly skilled professionals.

During the two-day visit, discussions focused on consultancy for Pakistan's hosting of IAEA ConvEx-2c on October 10, 2024. The exercise aims to test response arrangements for transnational nuclear or radiological emergencies.

PNRA expressed gratitude to Mr. Florian, Mr. Petre, and IAEA for their ongoing support and collaboration. The PNRA further reiterated its commitment to advancing nuclear safety, security and contributing to global peace and development.
